The submarine “Jantina” leaves the Greek island of Leros with 48 sailors on board, but was sunk by a torpedo.

Greek divers have discovered an Italian submarine at the bottom of the Aegean Sea that disappeared 80 years ago.
The submarine “Jantina” leaves the Greek island of Leros with 48 sailors on board, but was sunk by a torpedo fired by the British submarine “HMS Torbey” on July 5, 1941.

“The history of naval battles is like a puzzle and this find is part of it. Direct confrontation between submarines is rare,” one of the participants in the search was quoted as saying.
“Jantina” found its last refuge south of Mykonos at a depth of 103 meters. The submarine was identified through the archives of the Italian Naval History Service.
“Jantina” was founded in 1932 after fighting in the Spanish Civil War. It was sunk on June 5, 1941 by the British submarine “Bags“, which fired six torpedoes at once. Only six sailors survived and reached the Greek island of Mykonos.
