James Francis Cameron <\/strong>(born August 16, 1954) is a Canadian filmmaker<\/strong>. Best known for making science fiction<\/strong> and epic films<\/strong>, he first gained recognition for directing The Terminator <\/strong>(1984). He found further success with Aliens <\/strong>(1986), The Abyss <\/strong>(1989), Terminator 2<\/strong>: Judgment Day <\/strong>(1991), and the action comedy True Lies <\/strong>(1994). He also directed Titanic <\/strong>(1997) and Avatar <\/strong>(2009), with Titanic earning <\/strong>him Academy Awards <\/strong>in Best<\/strong> Picture<\/strong>, Best Director and Best Film Editing<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cameron co<\/strong>–founded <\/strong>the production companies Lightstorm Entertainment<\/strong>, Digital Domain<\/strong>, and Earthship<\/strong> Productions<\/strong>. In addition <\/strong>to filmmaking<\/strong>, he is a National Geographic sea explorer <\/strong>and has produced many documentaries <\/strong>on the subject<\/strong>, including Ghosts of the<\/strong> Abyss <\/strong>(2003) and Aliens of the Deep <\/strong>(2005). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cameron has also contributed to underwater filming <\/strong>and remote vehicle technologies <\/strong>and helped create the digital 3D Fusion Camera System<\/strong>. In 2012, Cameron became the first person <\/strong>to do a solo descent <\/strong>to the bottom <\/strong>of the Mariana Trench<\/strong>, the deepest part of the Earth’s ocean,<\/strong> in the Deepsea Challenger submersible<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cameron’s films <\/strong>have grossed approximately US$2 billion in North America<\/strong> and US$6 billion worldwide<\/strong>. Avatar <\/strong>and Titanic <\/strong>are the highest <\/strong>and third highest<\/strong>–grossing films <\/strong>of all time<\/strong>, earning $2.85 billion and $2.19 billion, respectively.<\/strong> Cameron holds the achievement of having directed the first two of the five films in history to gross over $2 billion worldwide<\/strong>. In 2010<\/strong>, Time magazine<\/strong> named Cameron <\/strong>as one of the 100 most influential people<\/strong> in the world<\/strong>. Cameron is also an environmentalist <\/strong>and runs several sustainability businesses<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
