Thor Heyerdahl<\/strong> (6 October 1914 \u2013 18 April 2002) was a Norwegian adventurer <\/strong>and ethnographer <\/strong>with a background in zoology<\/strong>, botany <\/strong>and geography<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heyerdahl <\/strong>is notable for his Kon<\/strong>–Tiki expedition <\/strong>in 1947<\/strong>, in which he sailed 8,000 km<\/strong> (5,000 mi) across the Pacific Ocean <\/strong>in a hand-built raft from South America to the Tuamotu Islands.<\/strong> The expedition was designed to demonstrate <\/strong>that ancient people <\/strong>could have made long sea voyages,<\/strong> creating contacts between societies. This was linked to a diffusionist model of cultural development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heyerdahl <\/strong>made other voyages <\/strong>to demonstrate the possibility of contact between widely separated ancient peoples, notably the Ra II expedition of 1970<\/strong>, when he sailed from the west coast of Africa <\/strong>to Barbados <\/strong>in a papyrus reed boat<\/strong>. He was appointed a government scholar in 1984<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He died <\/strong>on 18 April 2002<\/strong> in Colla Micheri, Liguria, Italy<\/strong>, while visiting close family members<\/strong>. The Norwegian government <\/strong>gave him a state funeral in Oslo Cathedral on 26 April 2002<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In May 2011<\/strong>, the Thor Heyerdahl <\/strong>Archives were added to UNESCO’s “Memory of the World” <\/strong>Register. At the time, this list included 238 collections from all over the world. The Heyerdahl Archives <\/strong>span the years 1937 <\/strong>to 2002 <\/strong>and include his photographic collection, diaries, private letters, expedition plans, articles, newspaper clippings, original book, and article manuscripts. The Heyerdahl Archives <\/strong>are administered by the Kon-Tiki Museum<\/strong> and the National Library of Norway in Oslo.<\/strong>
Heyerdahl <\/strong>was born in Larvik, Norway,<\/strong> the son of master brewer Thor Heyerdahl<\/strong> (1869\u20131957) and his wife, Alison Lyng <\/strong>(1873\u20131965). As a young child, Heyerdahl showed a strong interest in zoology<\/strong>, inspired by his mother<\/strong>, who had a strong interest in Charles Darwin’s theory <\/strong>of evolution<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
