Researchers have found an ancient shark<\/strong> in the North Atlantic<\/strong>, believed to be between 300 and 512 years old<\/strong>, which could be the oldest living vertebrate<\/strong> in the world.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This particular shark<\/strong>, was measured at 18 feet in length<\/strong> and weighed over a tonne<\/strong>. By measuring the size of the shark, researchers suggest the animal could have been born as early as 1505<\/strong>, making it even older than Shakespeare<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Greenland sharks are huge beasts, that can grow up to 5m in length<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They can be found, swimming slowly<\/strong>, throughout the cold<\/strong>, deep waters <\/strong>of the North Atlantic.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The animals only reach sexual maturity<\/strong> when they are 4m-long<\/strong>. And with this new, very lengthy age-range, it suggests this does not occur until the animals <\/strong>are about 150 years old.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because of their extreme longevity, Greenland sharks <\/strong>may still be recovering <\/strong>from being over-fished<\/strong> before WW2<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sharks’ livers were once used for machine oil<\/strong>, and they were killed <\/strong>in great numbers <\/strong>before a synthetic alternative <\/strong>was found and the demand fell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“When you evaluate the size <\/strong>distribution all over the North Atlantic<\/strong>, it is quite rare that you see sexually mature females<\/strong>, and quite rare that you find newborn pups or juveniles<\/strong>,” the experts explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It seems most are sub<\/strong>–adults<\/strong>. That makes sense: if you have had this very high fishing pressure<\/strong>, all the old animals – they are not there any more. And there are not that many <\/strong>to give birth to new ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“There is, though, still a very large amount of ‘teenagers<\/strong>‘, but it will take another 100 years <\/strong>for them to become sexually active<\/strong>.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The statistical method <\/strong>used to determine the sharks’ ages <\/strong>is Bayesian statistics<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
