The US-based Basel Action Network (BAN)<\/strong> as part of efforts <\/strong>to prevent European wastes <\/strong>from being exported <\/strong>to developing nations<\/strong>, managed to stop the shipment <\/strong>of the 37 containers <\/strong>by sending a warning letter to waste shipment authorities and representatives of COSCO Shipping <\/strong>in the Greek <\/strong>port of Piraeus<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The coalition <\/strong>had established <\/strong>that the Cosco Pride boxship <\/strong>was to be loaded with 37 containers <\/strong>full of German plastic waste<\/strong>, which had originally been sent to Turkey <\/strong>but were now slated to be re-exported to Haiphong, Vietnam.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through <\/strong>the protest letter<\/strong>, the coalition managed <\/strong>to block <\/strong>the shipment <\/strong>after the loading of the containers in Piraeus was stopped <\/strong>on request <\/strong>from the Greek customs authorities<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BAN <\/strong>said there are at least 80 more containers full of German plastic<\/strong> waste believed to be sitting <\/strong>in Turkey<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2020<\/strong>, the EU exported <\/strong>around 33 million tons <\/strong>of waste <\/strong>to non-EU<\/strong> countries<\/strong>. Turkey <\/strong>happens to be the EU\u2019s primary dumpsite<\/strong>, receiving 13.7 million tonnes of waste in 2020<\/strong>, followed by India<\/strong>, where 2.9 million tonnes <\/strong>of trash <\/strong>were dumped<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It is imperative <\/strong>that Germany <\/strong>take responsibility <\/strong>for the wastes they have been dumping <\/strong>in Turkey <\/strong>and now around <\/strong>the globe<\/strong>,” said Nihan Temiz Ata<\/strong>. of Greenpeace Mediterranean <\/strong>in Turkey<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
