The 23m (75ft)<\/strong> wreck<\/strong>, found in the Black Sea <\/strong>by an Anglo<\/strong>–Bulgarian team<\/strong>, is being hailed as officially the world’s oldest <\/strong>known intact shipwreck<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It’s when the ROV <\/strong>(remote operated vehicle) drops down <\/strong>through the water <\/strong>column and you see this ship appear <\/strong>in the light at the bottom so perfectly preserved <\/strong>it feels like you step back in time<\/strong>.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reason the trading vessel<\/strong>, dating back to around 400 BC<\/strong>, has remained in such good condition <\/strong>for so long is that the water <\/strong>is anoxic<\/strong>, or free of oxygen<\/strong>. Lying more than 2,000m below <\/strong>the surface, it is also beyond <\/strong>the reach <\/strong>of modern divers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
